The story of Oscar

Update on Oscar

Last month we told you about Oscar, a horse who couldn’t even stand up on his own due to neglect and his poor body was covered in nasty sores.  The news this month is excellent, below is a photo of Oscar with Erika at Rancho Luz del Sol where he has been taken care of and now weighs over 350kilos! Well done Erika and Jay – a great success story!!

Background story – November 2010

On 10th September, Erika from Rancho Luz del Sol and Sharon Wade from Acaballo in Antas rushed to Oscar’s aid. He was down and had been for at least 24 hours. In attempts to get himself up and get to a bit of straw that was near him, he had rubbed his skin through to flesh all over one side of his body. A vet had been called and treated him for colic but he had just left and Oscar was alone.

With the aid of vet Jose Luis Garcia from Almerimar, it took 10 hours to get Oscar up. After many failed attempts he was eventually raised with a digger and harnessed up with heavy straps. He stayed there for a week being visited daily by Sharon or Erika to feed and treat his wounds. At the end of the week it was decided to take the chance and move him to Rancho Luz Del Sol where he could get proper care and attention.

Oscar had just got himself caught up in a dispute between his owner and the owner of the place he was stabled at. Both are blaming the other party for the state he was in.

He has now been with us for 4 weeks. He has been on 3 drips, antibiotics, medications for fever, anti-inflamatories, and special creams for his wounds, which are cleaned and treated several times day as they cannot be covered.

We’ve put him on a special diet through which he has gained 80 kilos and regained the sight in the right eye. He is now going for 2 long walks day and getting much stronger. We are confident now he will make a full recovery and become a lovely horse with a happy life.

Jay and Erika now have four horses that they have rescued and are caring for. Needless-to-say vet fees are not cheap and any contributions are more than welcome. To keep up to date with Oscar’s progress or any other of the horses, visit the Rancho Luz Del Sol website:www.rancholuzdelsol.com or make friends of Facebook.
